Neon is a chemical element; it has the symbol Ne and atomic number 10. It is the second noble gas in the periodic table. Neon is a colorless, odorless, inert monatomic gas under standard conditions, with approximately two-thirds the density of air.
Used to fill glow lamps, fluorescent lamps, and plasma displays. It is especially useful in lighting systems that are used in cold areas.
Used in several types of gas lasers including ion lasers and excimer lasers. It's its biggest use is in helium-neon lasers, which are used in a variety of commercial applications, such as scanners at supermarket checkout counters to read bar codes on grocery items.
Used as lightning arresters used to shield electrical equipment from lightning.
Used as a cryogenic refrigerant, as it has over forty times the refrigerating capacity per unit volume as helium.
Is one of the components in some lung diffusion mixtures, which are used for pulmonary function testing. These mixtures are also used to calibrate analytical instruments that measure the amount of carbon monoxide diffused through the lungs.
Used as a filling gas in spark chamber particle detectors, Geiger tubes and other detectors, fluorescent lamps, sodium discharge lamps, digital display tubes, stroboscope lights, in signs in mixtures with argon, filament lamps, and telephone line surge arrestors.
Used as a buffer gas or the active medium in various types of gas lasers such as helium/neon, excimer or copper vapor lasers.
Used as a carrier gas in chromatography applications.
Liquid neon is used in the following: liquid hydrogen replacement studies, cryo-sorption and cryo-pumping, nuclear particle detection in bubble chambers, and in lung diffusion gas mixtures.
